An Honest Rimmel Apocalips Review

I did it again, I fell for the hype.

Mainly, I blame Boots for being practically on the doorstep and as I was wandering around looking for vitamins I just happened to come across the very-much-blogged-about : Rimmel Apocalips and was sucked in by their uniqueness. After swatching a few I decided on Galaxy as I'm always drawn to berry shades.

The Apocalips (£5.99) range (for those at the back) are a type of lipgloss/lipstick hybrid aka lip lacquer; they have all the pigmentation of a lipstick and the sheen of a gloss without any stickiness. Sounded like the perfect combination if you ask me...

So, I bought one. And yes, that means I broke my spending ban, but it turns out I wasn't the only one, which made me feel less guilty! But am I pleased now I've tested it? I guess my answer would be no. It's so hard to resist buying something when so many people say it's amazing, and normally the majority are right, however I've got to say I'm a little bit disappointed with this one.

I can't deny that the pigmentation of this product is very good, I'll give it that and there are a good selection of colours. However, there are more cons than pros and therefore I don't see it as a particularly good buy.
Firstly, I think the doe-foot applicator is very clumsy. The product seems to gather in the dip of the doe-foot and so gives an un-even finish. Which, for a colour that is so strong, is quite irritating. Perhaps it's one of those things you can put on the back of your hand and apply with a brush?

Secondly, the 'scent' of these is so foul it puts me off using it completely. Remember when you used to buy makeup that was associated with Barbie as a child, or even Playdoh? Well... It's a mixture of the two, and then still probably worse. Very plastic-y and fake smelling. Disappointing, as, while these aren't particularly pricey, they're not exactly a pound either, which is what I'd expect for something that smells like it does.

Finally, they're drying. The consistency is quite creamy and opaque however it just doesn't last. They stay around two/three hours most, the gloss disappears fairly quickly and then the stain left behind begins to tighten as they disappear, very annoying and again, a shame.

I think these definitely had potential to be great, and there are people who can clearly see past the scent as a whole bunch of people raved about these. Overall I think the colour and pigmentation are probably the only pro's about this product. Personally, I'm glad I didn't buy more than one as even this hasn't been used more than a handful of times. It's a shame as I really wanted to love these, but, I just don't.

What do you think? Worth the hype, or not?

  1. I definitely agree with you on this, it's an okay product but I won't be buying anymore! I have one in Celestial and although I think the colour is lovely, it fades pretty quickly and leaves you with the annoying stain around the outside of your lips!x

    1. Yeah! If it didn't have such a hyped up reputation I guess it would have been ok, but because I was expecting something great I'm just really disappointed! Xx

  2. So glad I'm not the only one! I thought the pigmentation was great and yes they were a nice product but the smell is just horrendous! I can imagine it giving me a headache if it lingered for too long. I found them to be a little drying as well, I have two and will use them but I don't think they are anywhere near as marvellous as everyone says xx

    1. Agreed! It's such a terrible, off putting scent, I don't own anything else, even cheaper products, that don't smell like that xx

  3. That's the beauty of a well executed PR campaign - send the stuff to so many people they'll write good things about it in order to not be blacklisted by the PR company and receive more stuff.

It doesn't really give an accurate opinion of the product, as most reviews I've seen from people who've actually spent money on the gloss are more 'meh' than 'OMG THIS IS BRILLZBALLS!!1!'

Shame though, as it promised a lot. Anything that dries my lips is a huge no-no!

    1. Hahah, 'brillzballs' is amazing...

It's definitely a difficult situation for bloggers to be put in a guess, but I'm glad I buy mine with my own dollar then there's no weight on my shoulders. If I don't like something, then I'll sure to say, you know?

It is a shame, I really wanted to like them! xx

  4. I have galaxy and one other of these and although I do find them a little drying once the 'glossiness' has gone I just put a bit of lipbalm over the top and they're good to go. I really liked them, guess they're not for everyone though! :)

  5. If you've still got your receipt then take it back! Most Boots are fab with returns if you're not happy with the products x

  6. It's refreshing to see a different review from the almost identical ones that pop up everyday on my Blogger dashboard! I was never really interested in this to start with (not even sure they have been released in Canada anyway?!) but I am glad I have read your review. Thanks x

    1. No problem :) I don't mind doing negative reviews, as it's always my honest opinion. Does make me think I'm the only one though haha & maybe I'm using it wrong, but maybe it's just a case of different things work for different people :)

  7. Brilliant review, it's nice to read a honest review from someone who didn't like it that much! I hate all the hype that surrounds new products and sometimes feel that bloggers get too caught up in and feel like they have to post a great review even if they haven't enjoyed the product!

Yeah, it's a difficult one. I think the hype can be a hindrance to a product anyway, if I'd have picked this up without all the rave reviews I may have thought differently because the disappointment wouldn't have been so great!

  8. That's a completely new version to what I heard so far about the product. It anyway hasn't been launched in Dubai!! Yes, I was waiting for them....
You review would definitely help me decide....

  10. I haven't tried them yet, but I tried the YSL Glossy Stains and as much as I like the formula and colour pay off, the smell really put me off and they also hurt my lips a little bit! I'm quite happy I didn't give in to this hype, haha.

  12. I definitely agree with you on this! The smell really puts me off and like you said, it had such a great opportunity to be great but it's a shame it didn't meet up to my expectations! :(

  14. I've got pretty much the exact post saved in my drafts, I think they're awful! The smell is absolutely vile and don't get me started on transfer! xx

  15. I was never that interested in these, but it's good to see a review from the other side of the story. Everyone seems to be gushing about them and it always seemed too good to be true.

  16. when they first came out everyone was buying them 3 at time since Rimmel conveniently had a 3 for 2 offer on and then came a flood of reviews on how they're nothing special. as soon as everyone started talking about them I refused to ever give into the hype on this one haha x x x

  17. Great to read a very honest review about these!

  18. Glad I read this, lucky I had no money when they were being hyped. I was going to buy them next week, as I'm doing a beauty shop, so I think I'll leave them. Colour wise they look amazing, but by the sound of the smell and drying I think I would end up throwing it. great review x

  19. Well I don't believe these have been released in the states yet, but I'm a little disappointed as this is the first negative review I have heard! I have seen plenty of good reviews by people who went out and bought the shades (weren't just sent them for free) but I'm definitely more apprehensive now. I'll probably just start off buying one instead of all of them like I had planned before!! Thanks for your honesty!!

  20. Well, I absolutely LOVE the smell. Reminds me of the redcurrant juice my grandmother used to make and I drank it almost every chance I got when I was a kid:) I bought mine today, so I don't know if they are drying... But for their price this seems to be a very okay product. Just to give you guys another point of view as well:)

  22. I'm so glad I read your review! I was just about to buy a set from ASOS (because they're not out in Aust yet) and now you've saved me like $42 :P Thanks!

  23. AGREED! I tried these in store and have NO idea why they were being raved about so much - I find they bled a little bit as well, didn't buy any!! That shade is lovely on you though x

  24. It's funny, I bought one expecting to hate it and actually loved it! I have the corally red one (think it's called stellar) and find the colour lasts all day! Shame you don't like yours at all. The colour is so pretty on you!

  25. I bought one, then a couple of hours later a second one, and then after a couple of days a third one :) They are not my favourite lip product, but they are quite ok, I enjoy using them - I don't mind the smell, I like the applicator and somehow it doesn't make my lips dry, I just don't like how it sinks into the fine lines on my lips :) I hope there won't be any new offers on this one, because I am already thinking about getting a 4th shade ;)

    greetings from Istanbul!

  26. I actually did love the product itself, but I agree about the applicator -- something about the "sunk in" part in the middle makes it feel as though I have no control over the application. I'm almost considering buying disposable doe-foots just to use it.

    Otherwise, I love them.

  27. I'm another that really did genuinely like them, but I think a big part of that is that I actually like the smell of these. The pigmentation is great, the price point is right, but if I didn't like the smell, I'd be right there with you. The scent of a product will make it or break it for me, so I can definitely understand where someone wouldn't like it!

  29. I got 'big bang' and 'apocaliptic and 'I have noticed no smell, it didnt fade.( I probably experienced no fading because I have the brightest colours ) I find them so so easy to apply , they give a perfect finish for me. I do agree however that they are drying, I just use my babylips over the top.
