Herbert, the African Pygmy Hedgehog.

Introducing the new addition to the house;

Internet, meet Herbert, the seven week old African Pygmy Hedgehog!

Cute isn't even the word.

We've had him four nights now and he's settling in wonderfully. Like most 'babies' he enjoys sticking in his head in his food bowl, snoozing, snuggling... and pooing all over. (You can't exactly be mad at that little face though).

He's lovely and making such an interesting pet, I'm learning so much along the way. I've wanted an APH for such a long time, it's just amazing to have him finally here!

There's been a lot of questions about the fact he's quite unusual, so...

...for those interested (it's fact time!) :

  • Firstly, yes, it is legal and yes, they can be kept as pets!

  • He lives in a rabbit size cage & when he's twelve weeks old he'll get a 12" wheel.

  • He is nocturnal and becomes a very grumpy, prickle bomb when he wakes up.

  • He eats cat biscuits - which is very funny to watch - also chicken, egg & mealworms.

  • He is Chocolate coloured and Algerian (the little brown cheek markings).

  • He will lick/nibble any new smell (inc. people), then foam at the mouth and lick his quills; known as anointing - also very amusing.

  • He is the most adorable pet I have ever, ever had.

  • He likes pooing on people (read: me).

I've been a bit snap happy - my instagram is now hedgehogram - but still, expect to see lots more pictures soon! :)

Possibly my favourite picture so far; head tickles!

Herbert can also now be found on Facebook :)

Hope you're all having a lovely Jubilee Weekend.

If you ever need any hoglet advice then let me know and I'll help out if I can :-) xx

  7. Aww! Thank you. Yes to be fair we do wake him up for cuddles so I guess it's only normal that he is busting for the toilet after such a long snooze! Peppa sounds lovely! Xx

  10. I have been looking into getting a hedgehog for some time! It'd difficult to find breeders out here in Belarus, though. Did you get Herbert from a standard pet store or from a specialized breeder?

Congrats to you and best of luck!!!

  15. yes, the German are also crazy for these critters - our cousin Peter and his bride Barbel had a hedgehog wedding cake. It was adorable and delicious all at once.

  17. He is pretty adorable! Thanks for the comment :)

  18. We got him from a specialised breeder in the area :) I'd advise that rather than a pet shop as it's important to get them from a young age, for them to be able to get comfortable with you, as they can be quite grumpy little creatures!

  19. hehe! I'll be sure to tell him x

What made you want a hedgehog as a pet? In the future, will you be getting him a companion or are they solitary animals?

  42. Doesn't get much cuter than that!

    ReplyDelete
  43. So adorable! I'd be afraid to keep one though because I'd end up sitting on it or something (I'm such a clumsy butt).

Great header imagine btw! Very creative and artsy!

  44. I am so jealous! I have always wanted a hedgehog! They are my absolute favourite animal! Sadly, we don't have them in Australia, and customs won't let them in. I just love him though, enjoy the little fella...well maybe not the poo!

  45. Herbert is a cute little creature. Be sure not to step on him, he is so tiny.

  46. So super cute!
My daughter took care of two of them for a week. One was albino. Because of light sensitivity, he would stick his head in a toilet paper roll during the day. Such a crack up!
    Congrats on being Freshly Pressed!

  48. Aw cute! There are a couple of different wild types here, but not many as quite as the Pygmy! :)

    ReplyDelete
  49. That is the general first reaction :)!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Certainly is :) he was acting very diva-esque last night. Must know he's been Freshly Pressed hehe!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Haha! An avocado plant may be more useful, although maybe not as fun :) thanks for commenting!

    ReplyDelete
  52. Thank you! Loving the name 'honeybadger' :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. :) I'm sure he says 'thank you'!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Aw hehe, yes he's pretty cute. Causes more happiness than he realises! X

    ReplyDelete
  55. Hi! Well, my OH is allergic to most cat/dog fur and as we live in a city centre apartment it wouldn't really be fair. So our options were narrowed down to an animal that could live inside. I've always looked & wanted an APH so I kept suggesting it hehe and here he is!

He'll always be solitary. They're pretty grumpy animals and would happily be left alone completely if they had the choice. So to socialise him a bit more we need to hold him for an 1hr+ every day :)

    ReplyDelete
  56. Aw, what a great school time thing to do! Yes he is a lot of fun, not sure he realises! :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. Aw! She really is tiny! And very adorable :)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Il definitely make sure I won't :) he never really leaves my lap anyway, forever snoozing!

    ReplyDelete
  59. Hehe! :) I'll pass on the message!

    ReplyDelete
  60. Aw haha yes we never really introduced him to my mums dog when she was over - just in case, but she never even noticed the cage! So it worked out well :)

    ReplyDelete
  61. Aw! Amazing! Hope you all have a happy hog life together! :)

    ReplyDelete

  65. There's a couple more photos on the Sunday Snap posts I do! :) but I'll be sure to please his fans with more pictures!

    ReplyDelete
  66. :) only a hedgehog sleeping on their back maybe slightly cuter (there's a picture on the web somewhere! It's adorable).

    ReplyDelete
  67. Thank you!

Hehe yes my OH is always worrying about dropping him or hurting him but they're pretty robust little creatures :)

    ReplyDelete
  68. I know! If I could I'd have a house full of the little critters :)

    ReplyDelete

  80. What an adorable little pet! And these are lovely photos of him. I've just started a blog on which I'd like to have people share their stories, providing an interesting read and a way for people to get their experiences noticed. It can be something you've already written, or you can write something new. Anything you think worth sharing! (Possibly something about Herbert)? My blog address is: http://pragmaticallyeccentric.wordpress.com. Conditions and all are on there. I hope to hear from you soon! :)
